As a basketball counsellor as an American summer camp you will be teaching basketball to groups of children of different ages and ability levels. You may need to organise and plan sessions, lead warmups and cool-downs, referee games and teach a range of skills like dribbling, lay ups and passing. Roles could include basketball counsellor, general counsellor with extra basketball responsibilities or general sports counsellor.
To work at an American summer camp in a basketball role you need to be a skilled and knowledgeable basketball player. Skills could include ball control, coordination, dribbling, drills, free throws, lay-ups, passing, positions, refereeing a game, scoring, shooting plus a thorough understanding of the rules and regulations. Outside of these skills you will need patience, adaptability and confidence as you will be leading group sessions with children of different ages and abilities.

Not necessarily. Some camps may prefer you to have experience coaching children basketball. This could be through volunteering at local clubs or helping during sessions at your school. Formal qualifications are generally not required, just a good level of skill.
This will differ camp to camp but generally as a basketball counsellor you will be leading basketball coaching sessions for different groups of ages and abilities during the day. You may or may not have extra counsellor responsibilities in the mornings and evenings, this depends on your role and camp type. Outside of your responsibilities you will get to experience camp life and American culture, and most importantly, have lots of fun!
