Cooking jobs at American summer camps involve teaching children a range of recipes in order to demonstrate different culinary skills. This is different to a support staff job where you would be cooking for the campers, cooking counsellors cook with the campers to develop their skills. You would be responsible for making sure that the campers knew how to use knives, stoves and burners safely and how to handle food hygienically.
To work as a culinary arts counsellor at summer camp you need to be able to demonstrate and teach a range of cooking and baking skills. This includes caramelising, chopping, mincing, sautéing and grilling. You may need to find or create recipes for campers to follow ensuring that instruction is clear and easy to follow. You also need a good understanding of kitchen safety and food hygiene.
