Whether you’re already a qualified swim coach or are a passionate swimmer keen to learn, the responsibilities of a swimming camp counsellor includes teaching campers with a wide range of ability and confidence levels. You can expect to teach different swimming strokes including breaststroke, front crawl and butterfly, organise pool games and maintain pool safety. You may also teach swimming in open water sources like lakes. Roles include swim coaching (both trainable and qualified roles). General counsellor roles may also desire swimming as a skill.
Working in a swimming role at an American summer camp requires an enthusiasm for swimming, good communication skills and a willingness to help others develop their abilities. Depending on the position, useful skills may include the ability to perform and teach stroke technique, dives and tumble turns, planning and organising lessons accounting for different abilities, an awareness of First Aid and pool safety and experience swimming in open water.

Yes. Swimming is a common activity at American summer camps and most offer swim coaching roles. The available positions and requirements vary by camp and some coaching roles may require coaching qualifications. Other camps may provide training at camp where you may need to complete a course such as the American Red Cross Swim Instructor Training Course.
Swimming coaches help organise and plan sessions, demonstrate stroke and diving techniques, lead drills and games, and most importantly encourage campers to have fun whilst staying safe in the water!
Yes. Requirements differ depending on the specific camp and role. You can apply as a trainable or qualified swimming coach. If you don’t have any coaching experience or qualifications, you would apply as trainable and complete these qualifications at camp (if required).
