Description:
History In 1924 a group of teachers, social workers, and businessmen saw that deserving girls in New York City’s Lower East Side could benefit from a summer camp experience outside of the city. The Vacation Camp Association (Vacamas) was formed and began serving girls in Kingston, NY. Vacamas later expanded to serve boys and moved to its current location in West Milford, NJ in 1955. Since then, our programs have grown in size and diversity.

Today In addition to summer camp experiences, Hands In 4 Youth delivers year-round services in urban afterschool programs and our Conference and Retreat Center.

Mission Hands In 4 Youth inspires young people from diverse backgrounds to be fully engaged in school and life, so they have the opportunity and choice to pursue their dreams.

Vision A world where all children have the opportunity and choice to pursue their life’s dreams.

What We Do Hands In 4 Youth engages young people in recreation, education, the arts, and service learning to develop a young person’s social intelligence, confidence, and educational prowess.

Method We teach young people to set and pursue goals, live responsibly in the world, reflect on their successes and disappointments, and take progressive action towards their dreams.

Campers Hands In 4 Youth’s Camp Vacamas hosts approximately 110 – 130 campers per session in one 12-day trip and two 19-day trips. As our campers come from all walks of life in the greater New York/New Jersey area, some may have difficulty expressing themselves, adjusting to people, or navigating a camp environment. We depend on staff like you to help them adapt, learn, and grow.
