What Does a Camp Counselor Do at Camp New York?
Camp counselors are the heart and soul of our summer programs. As a counselor at Camp New York, you’ll guide campers through daily activities, ensure their safety, and create an environment where children can grow, learn, and have fun. Our counselors don’t just supervise, they inspire, mentor, and lead by example.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise a group of campers throughout daily activities or a specific one as a specialist
- Implement our program curriculum while adding your creative touch
- Ensure camper safety during all activities, including swimming and outdoor adventures
- Create and maintain a positive, inclusive environment for all campers
- Develop and lead engaging group activities, games, and team-building exercises
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor for campers
- Communicate effectively with parents, staff, and camp leadership

Qualifications and Skills for Summer Camp Counselor Jobs
Required Qualifications:
- 18 years or older by June 1, 2026
- High school diploma or equivalent (college students preferred) BUT DO NOT HAVE TO BE A STUDENT
- Positive attitude
- Experience working with children in recreational, educational, or group settings ideally
- Willing to work with children
- Ability to pass required background checks
- Available for the entire summer season around (June 15 – August 14, 2025)

- Strong leadership and communication abilities
- Problem-solving skills and good judgment
- Patience and empathy when working with children
- Ability to work as part of a collaborative team

Our Unique Programs and Activities
As a Camp New York counselor, you’ll have the opportunity to specialise in one of our program areas while also participating in general camp activities. Our diverse programs allow counselors to share their passions and develop new skills or be a general camp counselor.
Outdoor Adventure
Lead hiking expeditions, overnight camping trips, orienteering challenges, and nature education programs. Counselors in this track receive additional wilderness first aid training.
Waterfront Activities
Supervise swimming, teach canoeing and kayaking, lead fishing expeditions, and organize beach games. Waterfront counselors must have lifeguard certification.
Creative Arts
Facilitate visual arts, music, theater, dance, and digital media projects. Creative arts counselors help organize our end-of-summer showcase for parents.

Comprehensive Training and Support
All Camp New York counselors participate in a training program before campers arrive. This paid training covers everything you need to know to be successful in your role:

2026 Staff Training Dates
Required for all counselors: First week of contract
Training is paid and includes housing and meals as part of compensation. Additional specialized training for certain program areas may be scheduled before or during this period.
