Amer-I-Can
At Camp New York, we believe in the power of “Amer-I-Can” – not just as a play on words, but as a philosophy that celebrates what makes each of us unique while building a stronger community together. Our inclusive approach to youth development combines life skills training with cultural celebration, creating an environment where every camper can proudly say, “I can” while embracing their American identity.
Campers building community through shared experiences
The Amer-I-Can Philosophy at Camp New York
Inspired by the original Amer-I-Can program founded by NFL Hall of Fame legend Jim Brown, our Camp New York adaptation focuses on empowering youth through comprehensive life skills training. We’ve tailored this approach specifically for our camp environment, creating a unique experience that builds character while celebrating cultural diversity.
Our program is built on the belief that success is not reserved for a select few – it’s available to all who want it, plan for it, and take action to achieve it. Through structured activities and mentorship, we help campers develop the confidence to say “I can” when faced with life’s challenges.

Core Components of Our Amer-I-Can Program

Life skills training in action
Life Skills Development
Our structured 8-component curriculum helps campers master essential skills that allow them to meet their potential, improve behavior, and enhance their quality of life. From communication to conflict resolution, these skills form the foundation for success.
Cultural Celebration
We embrace the diverse backgrounds of our campers, creating opportunities to share traditions, stories, and experiences. This cultural exchange fosters mutual respect and appreciation while strengthening our camp community.
Community Building
Through team activities and shared responsibilities, campers learn the power of collaboration. Our community-focused approach teaches that individual success contributes to collective achievement.
Each component works together to create a comprehensive experience that transforms how campers view themselves and their place in society. By focusing on both individual growth and community connection, we prepare youth to become confident, capable contributors.
Success Stories: The Amer-I-Can Impact

Alumni sharing their journey with current campers
Camp New York’s Amer-I-Can program gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams. The life skills I learned helped me navigate challenges in school and beyond. Today, I’m a mentor to others because someone once believed in me.
– Michael T., Program Graduate
Stories like Michael’s are common among our program graduates. Many return as mentors, creating a cycle of positive influence that extends far beyond their time at camp. Our success is measured not just in the number of participants (over 5,000 youth served), but in the lasting impact on their lives and communities.
