Application Process
- Online Application – Complete our comprehensive application form at campnewyork.org/apply, including your background, experience, and interest in outdoor education.
- Video Introduction – You are able to submit a short 2-3 minute video sharing why you want to be a camp counselor and what unique qualities you’ll bring to Camp New York. This is an option and not mandatory, but helps get you placed!
- Interview – Selected candidates will participate in a interview with a member of the Camp New York team and then with a camp director or representative to discuss your experience and alignment with the Summer camp philosophy.
- Reference Checks – We’ll contact your references to learn more about your character and work ethic.
- Placement Offer – Successful applicants will receive a position offer with details about dates, responsibilities, and compensation.

Qualifications We Look For
Essential Qualifications:
- 18 years or older by June 1st
- Genuine interest in working with children and teens
- Commitment to outdoor education and environmental values
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Physical stamina for active summer camp life
- Strong communication skills
- Available for the full summer season (June-August)
Beneficial Experience:
- Previous work with children or youth programs
- Outdoor recreation skills (hiking, climbing, water sports)

- First aid/CPR certification

When should I apply to be a camp counselor?
We recommend applying as early as possible for the upcoming summer season. Our primary hiring period runs from January through April, but we sometimes have positions open until May. Early applicants have the best chance of securing a position and their preferred program area. The earlier you apply the better the choice!
Do I need previous Summer camp experience?
While previous camp experience is valuable, it’s not required. We’re looking for individuals with a passion for outdoor education, a willingness to learn, and the ability to connect with young people. Our comprehensive training program will prepare you for success, regardless of your background.
What is the time commitment for counselors?
Camp counselors commit to our full summer season, which includes a training period in early June followed by normally around eight weeks of camp sessions. Camp Counselors normally receive one day off per week and additional time off between sessions. The Camp New York placements usually concludes in mid-August and you then have 30 days to travel around America afterwards as part of your J-1 visa.
