The Role of a Summer Camp Photographer
As the camp photographer, you’ll be the visual storyteller of our summer community. Your images will help parents stay connected to their children’s experiences and provide campers with lasting memories of their adventures.
Camp photographers at Camp New York are responsible for capturing the spirit and energy of camp life. From morning flag ceremonies to evening campfires, you’ll document the full spectrum of the camp experience. Your photos will be shared with parents daily through our online portal and used for camp marketing materials.
This position requires someone who can blend into the background when needed but also engage with campers to capture authentic moments. You’ll need to be comfortable in all weather conditions and ready to hike across our beautiful grounds to document activities happening in different locations.

Key Responsibilities of a Summer Camp Photographer
- Capture daily activities across all program areas (sports, arts, waterfront, nature, etc.)
- Document special events, traditions, and camp-wide activities
- Take candid photos that showcase authentic camp experiences
- Organize, edit, and upload 300-500 high-quality photos daily
- Manage photo sorting and distribution through our online platform
- Capture cabin group photos and individual portraits
- Work with the camp marketing team to create content for social media and promotional materials
- Maintain and care for photography equipment

Qualifications and Skills
Required Skills
- Experience with DSLR or mirrorless cameras
- Understanding of photography fundamentals (composition, lighting, exposure)
- Proficiency with Adobe Lightroom for photo editing
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Physical stamina to move around camp throughout the day
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm for working with children

A Day in the Life of a Camp Photographer
Wonder what your summer days will look like? Here’s a glimpse into a typical day as a Camp New York photographer:
Morning
- 7:30 AM: Breakfast with staff
- 8:15 AM: Morning assembly photos
- 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Rotating through activity areas capturing morning programs
Afternoon
- 12:30 PM: Lunch and brief break
- 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM: Photo editing and uploading
- 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM: Afternoon activity photography
Evening
- 6:00 PM: Dinner with camp community
- 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM: Evening program photography
- 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM: Final editing and uploading

While we provide professional equipment, you’re welcome to bring your own camera and lenses if you prefer. All editing equipment and software is provided in our media center.
What are the living arrangements?
Photographers live in staff cabins with 2-3 other staff members. All meals are provided in our dining hall, and laundry facilities are available on-site.
Can I use the photos I take for my portfolio?
Yes! While Camp New York retains rights to all images, photographers are encouraged to use their work in personal portfolios with appropriate credit.
How much time off will I have?
Photographers receive one 24-hour period off each week, plus additional evening hours when not covering events. Between sessions, there are 1-2 day breaks.
